Making A Comeback

Hello my lovely followers,

I hope you had a wonderfully relaxing winter holiday and a fun-filled New Year! It's been a while, huh? I'll admit, I completely dropped the ball with blogging for the last few months. I really only meant to take off the month of October to concentrate on my college applications (I've gotten into two schools, by the way!), but that month quickly turned into three after I joined my school's theater department for the Christmas production. It was such a great experience, and I'm hoping to help out with our spring musical, but it did suck away a lot of my reading time. I apologize for being gone so long; I've really missed reading and writing and talking with all of you. (:

So, with the new year, I'm reading (and blogging again!) While I can't necessarily promise that my posts will always be consistent, I can promise that I'll do my best to get reviews and interviews and such up and running again.

Restoring Harmony Playlist

I had the opportunity to read Restoring Harmony by Joelle Anthony (review here) through The Teen {Book} Scene! As part of the book tour, I was asked to make a playlist of songs that I feel fit in with Restoring Harmony. Dystopian stories have always been a favorite of mine; they're usually fast-paced and brimming with suspense and the ever-present longing to explore the world the author created. Thankfully, Restoring Harmony does not disappoint on any of these counts. The reader is led on a journey through a futuristic and poverty-stricken North America, with Molly, our determined and musically-inclined main character.

Undoubtedly, one of my favorite bits of the book are the harvesting scenes. As a kid, I used to have a vegetable garden, and I loved collecting all the tomatoes and squash and cucumbers. So while I may just have positive connotations with gardening, I found those scenes in particular to be very lovely. It's clear that Anthony put a lot of heart into this book, and I'm sure I'm not the only reader to see that. Go look for it!

When Jill, a competitive high school fencer, goes with her family on vacation to the Bahamas, she is magically transported to an early eighteenth century pirate ship in the middle of the ocean.

So even though the synopsis for this one isn't exactly detailed, I'm definitely intrigued! In general I enjoy pirate stories (who doesn't love Pirates of the Caribbean, even as a guilty pleasure?), but I don't think I've actually ever reviewed one on Sparrow Review, despite several bloggers pleading with me to read Bloody Jack. Who knows though, maybe Steel will put me in a pirate-y mood?

First of all, the cover for Siren is full of intensity and is so striking I just want to snatch it from my computer screen and start reading. Not to mention the plot has me hooked already. *Runs to the library*

Honestly though,The False Princess sounds right up my alley! Royalty, magic, and fairy tales! WANT!

Through The Teen Book Scene, I have had the pleasure of welcoming Mindi Scott to Sparrow Review! Mindi is the author of Freefall, which comes out today! I asked Mindi about how her reading experiences have affected her writing process. Here's what she had to say!

I recently went to a wedding where the minister told the bride and groom, “I hope that your love for each other will continue to grow and that you’ll look back and think of this as the day in your marriage when you loved each other the least.”

That really stuck with me. I could relate it to my relationship with my husband. And also . . . to Young Adult fiction!

You see, during my pre-teen and teenage years, I was a big-time reader. At any given time you could find me in bed with a book, on the couch with a book, on the floor with a book, on a lawn chair with a book, in the bathtub with a book. Books and me were BFFs and all that stuff.

Some of my favorites back then were by Judy Blume, Cynthia Voigt, Victoria Holt, John Grisham, and Melanie Rawn. In case you aren’t familiar, the genres represented are middle-grade/YA, historical romance, legal thriller, and fantasy.

Kind of a big range, right?

When I decided in 2004 that I wanted to write a novel—for real!—the first thing I had to narrow down was which genre to write. Obviously, I’d been interested in quite a few types over years, but what would be the best choice?

So, that summer, I was at the library constantly. I read piles and piles and piles of books of all kinds. I quickly came to the conclusion is that the stories that truly spoke to me were contemporary young adult novels, so I decided that that was where I would begin with my writing.

Now, here it is six years later, and I’ve come a long way as a writer and as a reader. Looking back on my pre-teen/teen years, and even that summer of 2004, I can truly say that my love for YA has grown SO MUCH since then. And it continues to grow every day! ♥

So I might be one of the few that didn't LOVE The Dark Divine (review here)but I am willing to give the sequel a try. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the quality of the writing improves.

Plus, these covers are positively gorgeous. Even if I don't enjoy the book itself, I will always be able to drool over the cover. ;)

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins Review (Spoiler-Free)

The third and final installment of The Hunger Games series. If you haven't heard of it before, don't waste time feeling ashamed. Go pick yourself up a copy.

The first two-thirds of Mockingjay were torturous. Not that those chapters were terrible (they weren't by any means,) but it was so hard to have to wait to find out what happened. Some bits were boring, but the story gently rolled along until the last third. That's when it kicked in for me. The action began, you feel that tell-tale rush you get when Suzanne Collins is on her game. Mockingjay didn't disappoint. Only, in this one, each loss felt increasingly heartbreaking. There were points where literally it was blow after blow after blow; it became emotionally overwhelming. But, it was in those moments that you had to applaud Collins. She knows how to write a tough, strong female character. Katniss, even when she was broken, didn't bother to fix herself, not even attempt. She just did what was needed. She pulled it together, even when there wasn't anything to pull together. Impressive.

I loved the epilogue, especially the last line. It was perfectly imperfect. I wish there had been more explanation for what Katniss chose with Gale and Peeta. It felt rushed almost, wrapped up too quickly. I had never personally been able to choose between the two, but what Katniss decided felt right. I liked the ending, even though it seemed a bit jagged. There needed to be strings attached.

Rating: 9.5/10 (for those boring bits at the beginning. The end made up for it though.)

What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
My dad's a big reader. It runs in the family, along with insanity.

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
Through the awesome www.randombuzzers.com. Some of the folks in the forum were talking about their book blogs, and after reading a few, I knew I wanted to give it a shot.

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
Since it's summertime, I've really just been enjoying how much time I'm able to spend on my blog without feeling guilty about it. It feels good to start feeling on top of things again!

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em? Love 'em! Even though the books are almost always better, I love 'em. If I had it my way, everyone would be mandated to read then watch North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell and then Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens. Although those are actually mini-series. Still, you should watch them!

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
Everlasting by Angie Frazier- from what I hear, the romance in the book is great. And I love me some romance.

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show?
Glee- The music is amazing, but the plot gets so completely ridiculous at times.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I hate surprises, especially when I know there's a surprise coming, and no one will tell me what it is. They get me paranoid.

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
Would it have to be true to life? If so, I have no idea. However, if it could be some alternate universe that slightly resembles my life but not really, I'd love for Amanda Seyfried, Amy Adams, Anne Hathaway, and Meryl Streep to all have some part. Also, could I have a charming, adorable male lead. Please?

While visiting the campus of Princeton University, 16-year-old Lily discovers a secret gate to a magical realm and must race against time to save herself, her world, and any hope she has of college admission.

I'll admit, while I have a copy of Sarah Beth Durst's Ice, I have yet to read it. I've heard so many great things about her as a writer, I just haven't gotten around to it! Enchanted Ivy (love the play on words) looks awesome, and the cover art is amazing. Just the synopsis makes it sound like you're wandering into a fantastically magical world. Cannot wait!

Rae by Chelsea Rae Swiggett Review

Rae is beyond socially awkward.
Since she was a little girl, Rae knew something was different about her. The sound of planes flying overhead could spark a panic attack. Being called on in class was enough to push her over the edge. She feared the unknown, life, death, people . . . even fear itself.

By the time she reached ninth grade, Rae was muddling through life in relative silence, convinced everyone was mocking her, judging her, picking her apart, bit by little bit. Rae knew she couldn’t keep going on this way. She knew something had to give.

This book is near and dear to the heart of many book bloggers, as it was penned by our very own Chelsea of The Page Flipper. So after winning Rae in a contest, I was completely ecstatic to dive in.

In person, I would consider myself very shy. I don't raise my hand in class, I'm no good at small talk, and I absolutely HATE presentations. There was one passage in Rae that follows her thoughts throughout the day leading up to a class presentation. The only thing that ran through my mind was "That's me! That's exactly how I feel!" And, honestly, I don't think I'm the only one who will find her story relatable- everyone has been socially awkward. After you make that personal connection with Rae, the story skyrockets. It's a quick read- about 150 pages- but it became riveting. I really hope Chelsea continues to write. I'd pick up her next book in a heartbeat.

Also, can I say how much I loved the Gilmore Girls references? Check plus!

Themis Academy is a quiet boarding school with an exceptional student body that the administration trusts to always behave the honorable way--the Themis Way. So when Alex is date raped during her junior year, she has two options: stay silent and hope someone helps her, or enlist the Mockingbirds--a secret society of students dedicated to righting the wrongs of their fellow peers.

I'm kind of just blown away by the premise of this novel, and I am so beyond intrigued it's ridiculous! A group of high school vigilantes getting their revenge. Being in high school, sometimes you wish there was a way to get back at everyone who's wronged you. I guess if you can't do it in real life, you may as well live vicariously through someone else. ;) Definitely one worth waiting for.

In My Mailbox

This week was actually a busier one for me in terms of books! I about a few, I recieved a few, and I was able to go to the library. :)

Bought: I know I'm really behind as far as getting my hands on this book. I had requested it from the library- as number 480 on the queue- and decided I was too impatient to wait for it! I'm only a few pages in, but I realized I've missed Katniss' story so much. :)

Put me in front of the classics display and Barnes and Noble and I'll buy just about anything. Hence the Virginia Woolf novel, haha.

I'm SO EXCITED for this book. And the cover is so shiny! I'm ready to dive in!

School, Layout, and YOU!

I don't know about the rest of the world, but for me, school started this week. This year I'm finally a senior (!), but whoever said that the last year of high school was the easiest LIEDLIEDLIED. It's been nearly impossible to tackle the giant pile of homework every night, forget reading for pleasure. It'll undoubtedly take me a few weeks to get into a rhythm of finding time to read and write reviews, and I honestly can't promise that things will be very timely until I figure that out. School has always come first and foremost, and although I ADORE my blog and my followers and all my blogger buddies, my posts may be slowing down a bit for the beginning of the school year. Hopefully, though, I'll get things sorted out very soon!

In other news, I won a blog layout makeover from Dumplin Designs!!! EEEK! I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to have a fresh new look for Sparrow! Hopefully in the next month or so I'll have a brand new shiny layout. :D

I am not your typical book review blogger because I am only ten years old. Don’t let my age fool you though. I read on a high school level and review middle grade and age appropriate YA books. When I am not at school or working on homework, I am reading and reading and reading some more. You can easily tell that reading and blogging are my hobbies. I started my blog in March, so I am still pretty new to the whole blogging world. I have met so many nice and helpful people, like Cate! Now that school is out for the Summer, I will have even more time to read and blog. I am planning some interviews, giveaways, and other surprises. I hope you’ll come visit me.

What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
I have always loved to read. As a young child, my parents read fairy tales to me every day and night. When I was old enough to read on my own, I made my way from princess and fairy books to chapter books. Now, I am rarely seen without a book in my hands. I read all sorts of books – basically, anything I can get my hands (and eyes) on. Let’s just say, they know me at the local library!

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
I started posting book reviews on the Glogster edu web site for school. Since Glogster is so limited in what it lets you do, my mom introduced me to blogging instead. All I can say is “wow” to blogging!

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
I hosted my first giveaway! I gave away my signed copy of White Cat by Holly Black. The fun thing is that I had gotten the book at my very first book signing. So it was doubley-fun!

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
It depends. I loved the Twilight books and movies. For Lightning Thief though, I loved the book but didn’t care for the movie.

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?

I will admit that I enjoy watching Total Drama Action. In case you don’t know, it is a reality show cartoon on Cartoon Network. The new season, Total Drama World Tour, begins this Summer.

I was named after Arnold Schwarzenegger’s wife in the movie, Total Recall.

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
My movie would be called “Different” because I am not afraid to be different. Selena Gomez could play the part of Melina since she has long dark hair, just like me.

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White Review

But when someone--or something--starts taking out the vamps, werewolves, and other odd beasties she's worked hard to help become productive members of society, she's got to figure it out before they all disappear and the world becomes utterly normal. It wasn't until I finished Paranormalcy that I realized I hadn't read a good, laugh-out-loud funny book in a long time. Kiersten White's humor shines in her book, making it impossible to not instantly adore Evie and her infatuation with all things sparkly and pink. This includes her bejeweled taser (affectionately nicknamed "Tasey,") which is always nearby. It's Evie's girly nature- even her love for Easton Heights, a teen soap- that truly made this book for me. Evie longed for normal, she had guilty pleasures- she was a teenager. Being a teen myself, I so greatly appreciated a connection with the main character.

There's also the whole kick-ass aspect of this book. Evie means serious business when she bags/tags paranormals. She's definitely not afraid to use Tasey, that's certain. However, it should be noted that Para is not just a book of fight scenes; it's strongly backed by White's voice, which was the absolute BEST part. It's light and funny in all the right places, and completely in tune with a teenager. I was incredibly impressed by her debut, and if there's not a sequel I think I'll just die. *begs and pleads*

And Lend. Gorgeous, sweet, wonderful Lend. Sa-wooooon. Maybe Evie will share?

The ultimate battle between sisters is nearing, and its outcome could have catastrophic consequences. Alice will stop at nothing to reclaim her sister's role in the prophecy, and that's not the only thing she wants: There's also Lia's boyfriend James.

Lia and Alice always knew the Prophecy would turn those closest to them against them. But they didn't know what betrayal could lead them to do. In the end, only one sister will be left standing.

Last year, when I read Zink's Prophecy of the Sisters, I remember really getting into the story. I'm not a big fan of creepy paranormal books, but this one drew me in. The idea that twin sisters could be played against each other still blows my mind. The quality of the writing was a little iffy, but I was definitely intrigued enough to read the sequel.

Sydelle Mirabil is living proof that, with a single drop of rain, a life can be changed forever. Tucked away in the farthest reaches of the kingdom, her dusty village has suffered under the weight of a strangely persistent drought. That is, of course, until a wizard wanders into town and brings the rain with him.

In return for this gift, Wayland North is offered any reward he desires—and no one is more surprised than Sydelle when, without any explanation, he chooses her. Taken from her home, Sydelle hardly needs encouragement to find reasons to dislike North. He drinks too much and bathes too little, and if that isn’t enough to drive her to madness, North rarely even uses the magic he takes such pride in possessing. Yet, it’s not long before she realizes there’s something strange about the wizard, who is as fiercely protective of her as he is secretive about a curse that turns his limbs a sinister shade of black and leaves him breathless with agony. Unfortunately, there is never a chance for her to seek answers.

Along with the strangely powerful quakes and storms that trace their path across the kingdom, other wizards begin to take an inexplicable interest in her as well, resulting in a series of deadly duels. Against a backdrop of war and uncertainty, Sydelle is faced with the growing awareness that these events aren’t as random as she had believed—that no curse, not even that of Wayland North, is quite as terrible as the one she herself may carry.

NOTE: This post may contain copious amounts of fangirling. Don't say I didn't warn you.

I squealed after reading the last line of Brightly Woven. Literally SQUEALED. I didn't know I was even capable of making such a sound. Truly, though, it was a well-deserved squeal.

Brightly Woven reminded me of Eragon in the sense of the journey that Sydelle took, minus all the dragon talk. (Although it should be noted that there is mention of a dragon slaying!) I instantly fell in love with the richness of the story, with the complexities of Palmarta and Auster, and, of course, with North. North, the wizard love-interest whose sense of direction lacks- despite what his name implies- was exceptionally swoon-worthy. Although he was undoubtedly harsh and crude to start, North becomes a character that is both sweet and unforgettable.

If you haven't picked up Brightly Woven yet, you MUST! Right now, go request it from your library or order it online. This is one of my favorite books of 2010. What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
I loved it ever since I learned to read in Pre-K. My mom used to work at a library and she’d take me there every day and I’d be sitting in the Children’s section with my nose in a book. Growing up, I was famous for reading “too much”. It really shocked me that my other classmates didn’t read, or didn’t LIKE reading!

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
I thought I’d share my thoughts on the books I loved so much, so I thought I’d make a site, but they were complicated, and blogs were much easier, so I got a blog.

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
Wow, perfect question! I absolutely hate them. If you make a movie out of a really good book, the movie will always be bad, especially when the movie skips out on stuff in the book. I hate it when actors ruin the image of the character I have in my head. Like Edward Cullen, when I read the book a year before the movie came out, I had this awesome mental picture of a totally gorgeous Edward. Then the movie came out, and Rob Pattinson demolished my totally gorgeous Edward metal picture into a thousand pieces.

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
Ooh, tough one. I’ve recently been obsessed with Michelle Moran books (Nefertiti and The Heretic Queen) so I would buy her other book (which I haven’t read) Cleopatra’s Daughter.

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
Chocolate. I love love love LOVE chocolate, without it, I feel empty. I know too much chocolate is bad for me, but come on, who can resist chocolate?

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I’m a book reviewer (and blogger) I don’t tell anyone, and nobody knows that I blog. I'm sort of afraid of what they'll think of me. I’m sure my Language Arts teacher would go crazy over it :D

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
The Life and Times of Kirthi. It would cast ME, Aishwayra Rai, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and…a random guy. Aishwayra would be my mom, and Johnny would be my dad, and Orlando would be my brother (I wish!) and random guy would be a random guy. I’d hire a bunch of girls to be my friends too! Haha

Although I've seen mixed reviews for this novel, I still definitely want to give it a try. Pretty much every book I've read that's had dragons I've enjoyed. Eragon. Dragon Rider. Harry Potter. No doubt because they're amazingly awesome creatures. And, despite any negative reviews I've read, the cover draws me in, and I'm always willing to give books a chance.

I received this book through Traveling ARC Tours!

It's pretty safe to say that the majority of this story is told through the dialogue between the three sisters, April, May, and June. This was a major plus, considering that practically every bit of conversation was quote-able and chuckle-worthy. The wit was sharp and the sarcasam overflowing. I really appreciated the humor; it was almost like watching a wacky magic-infused Gilmore Girls episode. Each sister was fleshed out in the best way, with an individual sense of humor and a few flaws that will make you shake your head. The characterization was stellar.

However, I felt like the climax of the book was very flat. It wasn't so much that it was a completely predictable read, more that the build-up was lacking. Although the reader knows there is some imminent danger, because the book was so character-based, it's difficult to imagine that any of the sisters would come to great harm. It was pretty easy to sense that in Benway's writing.

Overall, a light, enjoyable read perfect for any last-minute beach trips. :)

I enjoyed Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver (review here!) Her writing is probably some of the most poetic I've found in YA Lit, so I'm very happy to have a book of hers to add to my shelf! Unfortunately, I haven't read Lament as of yet, but it's been added to my TBR pile.

I have heard a great many wonderful things about Maria V. Snyder and about Valek. Both have been incredibly positive, and I can't wait to dive in!

Personal Update:
I'm sure you've noticed my lack of reviews lately. Please know that it's not been for my lack of reading! I've kept a book in hand these couple of weeks for long car rides to college tours/senior portraits/beach trips. Most of today will be dedicated to catching up on reviews and my inbox and such. I'm desperately trying to get back on track, and I'm hoping that you, my lovely readers, will bear with me just a little longer.

Interview with Lauren Baratz-Logsted!

Today we have the love Lauren Baratz-Logsted, author of books including The Education of Bet and Crazy Beautiful. You can find my review of The Education of Bet (which I adored) here.

You write books for kids, teens, and adults! Do you find it at all difficult to transition from one to another in your writing process?
No. In fact, I think it's what keeps me fresh. I'm an eclectic reader who enjoys reading books in many different genres and for all age groups, and I'm the same with my writing. By the end of this year I will have had 19 books published and I've sold a total of 23. If they were all in one genre or just for one age group, I'd probably be burnt out and done by now. As it is, I feel like I'm just getting started.

How much and what kind of research was required for The Education of Bet?
Less than you might think. I've always loved books set in Victorian England and I find it's a period that's very accessible to me when I'm writing. Since The Education of Bet is inspired in large part by a book I read when I was younger - Tom Brown's Schooldays, by Thomas Hughes - I re-read that before starting and then I was pretty much good to go.

Who would ideally play Bet and James in the movie version of The Education of Bet?
I'd cast Emma Watson who's done such a wonderful job as Hermione in the Harry Potter films as Bet. For James, I'd like someone who'd be new to audiences so I looked over at the New Faces Models & Actors website, coming up with this guy, Adam Barnes.

What is one book that you would recommend to young adult readers, and why?
Talk about a difficult question! Just one??? The temptation is to pick the one book that would provide the best life lesson, but of course there isn't such a book. So I think I'll simply say my favorite YA book that I read in 2009: Freeze Frame, by Heidi Ayarbe.

Your next book for teens, The Twin’s Daughter, is due out this month. (It looks fantastic, by the way!) What were your first thoughts upon seeing the incredibly gorgeous cover?
The interesting thing is that the cover you see now isn't the cover we started with. I liked the first cover very much - it had an old-fashioned look to it and a very dark feel - but the publisher decided liking wasn't enough. They wanted me to be in love with the cover and they wanted to be in love with it themselves. Between the first cover and the final they must have gone through over 20 versions before this one finally leaped out at us all. I think it's safe to say that now we are all in love.

And, for the record, how do you pronounce your last name? ;)
Lauren is exactly as it looks. Logsted is exactly as it looks too, even if people are always trying to insert an 'a' into it to make it Logstead. It's the Baratz part that people always stumble over. Just take the Barrett in Elizabeth Barrett Browning and make it sound plural, like Barretts, and you'll have it.

Plus, living in North Carolina, I'm very familiar with the tale of the Lost Colony, and I've always been very interested. I actually got to see the play once on Roanoke Island. Fantastically awesome.

If you haven't read Lisa Klein's books before, I suggest you head over to the library immediately. And if you have, we're just going to have to wait longingly for Cate.

Could you give a little blurb on your blog?
My blog, Book Crumbs, consists of Middle Grade and YA book reviews (with a few classics and children’s books thrown in); poetry and other writing; any book related info; movie reviews (and trailers); interviews with authors and bloggers; arbitrary musings on absolutely random things; and more.

What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
I always loved reading as a child. I would come back from the library with huge stacks of books that I would finish in a few days. My school librarian in elementary school also had a big influence on me – she recommended great books and encouraged me to keep reading. I’ve always been a bookworm since then!

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
I first started blogging in June 2006, when a friend showed me her blog and encouraged me to start one. I was in fifth grade at the time and only posted poems and random stuff like weather forecasts. In the summer of 2008, though, I discovered Miss Erin, and I was inspired by her blog and her involvement in bookish things to start blogging about all the books I read.

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
In January, I got the opportunity to interview Shannon Hale about her new graphic novel, Calamity Jack. I’ve been a fan of Shannon Hale since I first read Princess Academy and The Goose Girl, and I was so excited that I got the chance to talk to her.

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
I’m always excited to see movies that are based off of books. Usually, I’m pretty disappointed because nothing can match up to the book! But there are a few movies which I think are just as good as the book, such as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale – I still don’t own any of the books in the series!

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
I love watching Arthur on PBS Kids sometimes – I think that the episodes are timeless and most people can sympathize with the characters despite age differences. As for a guilty-pleasure book, I’m still an avid fan of the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. I started reading the books in fifth grade, and I can’t stop! Every book ends in a cliffhanger, and I just have to read the next one.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I HATE crayons with a burning passion.

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
I don’t know what it would be called, but I do know that it would be very, very boring. As for casting, it would be ideal if I could play myself, but if not, my sister could play me. Or maybe it could be an animated movie…

And, if not, will Collins still be able to hold my attention?

My guess is yes. She's pretty talented.

Going off on Vacation

I loved the blog by author Penni Russon (Eglantines Cake) and was inspired to start a blog myself. Then I somehow stumbled across the YA book blogging community, and gave my book a focused theme of YA book reviews.

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
Announce my book deal! I don't have many friends who are readers/writers in real life, so it was great to have the support of lots of people on my blog.

Depends on the book & movie! Generally, I prefer books, but sometimes the visual aspect of movies adds something that the book didn't have.

If you didn't know me when I was fourteen, you don't know that I totally shaved my head. I went from having waist-length hair to total baldness. It was a bit of a shock!

I'd call it 'The Girl Who Knew Too Much' and I'd cast Angelina Jolie as an older version of myself. My parents would be played by Paris Hilton and Robert Pattinson.

Shifty by Lynn E. Hazen Review

Fifteen-year-old Shifty knows all about moving around and next to nothing about where he came from. When he's assigned to a new foster home and family, he tries hard to keep cool and stay out of trouble. But it seems like the more he tries to do the right thing, the more trouble he finds. As Shifty navigates a series of messy summer adventures, he struggles to find a balance between the street-wise spirit that has helped him survive and his longing for a place to call home. -Goodreads

Honestly, when I received Shifty for review, I was sure that it was only going to revolve around troubled kid who had hit rock bottom. In some aspects, it was. But there was one thing I hadn't counted on: Shifty was FUNNY. Laugh out loud, reread it three times funny. Although, when I first began reading it, I don't think I quite grasped exactly how hilarious it truly was. It didn't hit me until my mom asked about the book, and I recounted all the events that I had read up to. By the time I finished, we were rollin'. I'll never understand how Soli managed to get himself into so much trouble, but it was undoubtedly entertaining.

Here's an excerpt that I found particularly chuckle-worthy; Soli had just been given instructions from an elderly woman to deliver dinner to Lester, who was living in her home:

When we get in the elevator I look in the bag at Lester's dinner, it's a small bottle of water and a big can of cat food.
"Sissy, this is crazy. We can't do this."
"Why not?"
"Because either Lester is a cat, or he's a strange guy who eats cat food."
"Either way," Sissy says, "Lester's hungry."

I wouldn't say this is a traditional young adult book, by any means. There were times I felt that the story could easily fall into middle grade, had Soli been a bit younger. The book as a whole was a good surprise, and I'm interested in seeing what else Lynn Hazen has to offer the YA community.

Once Upon a Read-a-thon Wrap-Up

Let me start out by saying what I have learned from this read-a-thon experience, concerning myself, my reading habit, and things in general that I need to keep in mind for the next time I do this:

1) Choose books that are on the short side- you'll feel like you've gotten more accomplished
2) Do your best to block out those three days completely; I took a short break on Tuesday to hang out with some friends and ended up reading only a few pages for the day because I got so distracted ;P
3) I am a slow reader. That's just the way it is. Don't worry too much if you're like me- the read-a-thon is for your enjoyment, not something else to stress over. (Thanks to Sandy for helping me realize that!)
4) Have Twitter buddies! It just makes the experience a LOT more enjoyable.
5) Keep chocolate nearby. I don't think there's a logical reason for this, but I'd recommend it anyway.

In the end, I only read two books, but I ADORED both of them. I was amazed by the sheer imagination used in Brightly Woven, and Sisters Red was downright awesome. Chuck Norris would be proud. I can't wait to share my reviews with everyone!

Wishlist Wednesday: Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that one love -the deliria- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.

Okay, so I'm unsure as to whether the cover for Delirium has been released yet, but I've been unable to find it online. I *think* I saw the cover uploaded from a personal photo on an ARC tour site. Anyway, I remember it was quite breathtaking. I have yet to read Oliver's other book, Before I Fall, but when I read the synopsis for this one, I knew that she was an author to watch. I'm really interested in books that deal with government regulation of emotion or personal rights, and I would say that Delirium definitely falls into that category.

Plus, I love the name Lena. I'm not exactly sure why, but I always end up rooting for characters with the name. It all started with The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, I'm sure. :)

Once Upon a Read-a-thon

Hey Everyone! For the next three days I will be participating in the Once Upon a Read-a-thon! It's my very first read-a-thon, so I'm not really sure how what my tatctic will be yet (I haven't decided if I'm also going to write reviews during that time.) I plan on taking a short break on Tuesday so I don't go crazy, but otherwise my nose should be permanently stuck in a book. Here's a list of books that I have piled next to my bed at the moment. Oh my goodness- I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS BOOK!! Back before school got crazy, I was constantly checking Kiersten White's blog for updates (okay, I'll admit, I was borderline stalkerish.) Anyway, from the reviews I've read, there seems to be a unanimous conclusion: it's awesome. I'm not sure I can wait until the end of August.

Also, this is one of the most stunning YA covers I've seen in a while. Just gorgeous. Wanttttt.

Interview with Thalia Chaltas!

I have the great (and exciting) pleasure of welcoming Thalia Chaltas, author of Because I Am Furniture, to Sparrow Review for my first-ever author interview! Ms. Chaltas currently living in California, where she continues writing other works no doubt as brilliant as Because I Am Furniture.

Your biography reads that you have had trained to become everything from a kinesthesiologist to a helicopter pilot. When did you discover that you wanted to be a writer, and how have your many experiences helped you during your writing process?
I always wrote poetry, and I always wanted to write a novel (adult), but I didn't necessarily want to be a writer, per se. I think I thought that having one book on the library shelf would be great, but not my profession! "Oh I'll just whip off one novel and then move on..." After college, I kept learning new skills and finding them to be not quite what I wanted to "do" in life, interesting to me, but not applicable to what I thought of as real life. And along the way, I kept writing... In 2000 I joined a writer's critique group specifically for writing for children (because I thought it sounded "fun"), and this built a foundation and accountability, and a professionality I had not thought of before. I have not stopped since!

I don't know that specific past experiences and interests have helped my writing process, but I understand now that my tendency to gather information by learning something or doing something new is very useful. It is a great benefit as a writer to have the willingness to jump through the wormhole when it opens - how can I show what a character feels when they are bounced out of a raft in the rapids, if I am not willing to jump into rapids myself? So my passion for trying new experiences is what helps my writing, not necessarily drawing on the experiences I've already had. Although, sometimes those work, too. :)

Where did you find your inspiration for Because I Am Furniture, especially in light of its darker subject matter?
Unfortunately, my own childhood. I did not intend to write the novel, but poems came out of me, and after a lot of work I connected them together and started making it fiction. Once it was fiction, I loved writing it! I did not write BECAUSE I AM FURNITURE to state my case or punish or feel better - I wrote it because it developed into a novel with a great story and an unusual format and I enjoyed it.

What is one book that you would recommend to young adult readers, and why?
I happen to love books that stretch boundaries for me. I read a ton of sci fi and fantasy as a teen (and still do). One of my personal favorites recently was THE MAZE RUNNER by James Dashner. The main character does not know who he is or where he is, and the reader has to learn it all one page at a time with him. Social aspects, communication difficulties, friendships, broken bonds, self doubt - it's all in there. Brilliant, edge-of-your-seat stuff.

I read that you collect children's books- which would you consider the highlight of your collection?
I have some first editions I try not to drool on, like THE WIZARD OF OZ by Frank Baum, but honestly, my very favorite is an unusual middle grade book, tattered and discarded by a library when I was young, called TAASH AND THE JESTERS, by Ellen McKenzie. I am fairly certain it is not in print and I have never found anyone else who has read it! Taash is a young boy who is getting restless and curious (and damn grumpy) about the outer world and takes off into it, and ends up in a separate world from his, with the unlikely protection of twin jesters who appear and disappear. Of course, Taash finds out he is not who he thought he is. And isn't that true for all of us?

Do you listen to music as you write, or do you prefer quiet?
I would love to listen to music! I would love to have a playlist on my website and say "I listened to this because it inspired such and such -" But honestly, although I am very musical myself, I tune out everything when I write. So I could put on the iPod or a cd but I would not hear any of it! Waste of electricity for me.

Are you in the process of writing any other novels, and are they also in poems? Have you dabbled in prose as well?
I am finishing a new novel in poems, and it is scheduled to come out in Summer 2011. Keep track of news on that on my website. I have always written poetry, but I have always written my stories in prose, until recently. I tend to think in small gatherings of words, as in poetry, so writing prose takes a bit longer for me. Poems just come out of me fastest, and I am very happy that there is a genre specifically for novels in verse. It suits me!

The Education of Bet Review

Bet is sixteen, very intelligent, but only knows as much as her limited education will allow. In Victorian England, girls aren't allowed to go to school. Will is also 16, and though not related by blood, he and Bet act like brother and sister. In fact, they even look like brother and sister. And though they're both raised under the same roof, by the same kind uncle, Will has one big advantage over Bet: He's a boy, and being a boy means he isn't stuck in the grand house they call home. He gets to go out into the world--to school. But that's not what Will wishes. He wants to join the military and learn about real life, not what's written in books.

So one night, Bet comes up with a plan. She'll go to school as Will. Will can join the military. And though it seems impossible, they actually manage to pull it off.
But once Bet gets to the school, she begins to realize the education she's going to get isn't exactly the one she was expecting.

I didn't know exactly what I was getting into with The Education of Bet. I'd seen its gorgeous cover on an ARC tour site, read the synopsis, and signed up for it on the spot. I still haven't actually read any reviews, but I know a few other bloggers that were equally as excited about cracking open the cover as I was.

That being said, I wasn't sure if this was going to be hard-core historical fiction. Even though I really love the genre, it's unusual that I'll pick up an HF book, because I feel like you have to have a certain mood and minset. BUT, I was so pleasantly surprised. Bet was light read, it was easy to slip in and out of the story. Although the tale started off slowly, Bet's humor and naivety quickly roped me in. I laughed at her hilarious mishaps and shook my head at her stupidity. I even wanted to punch (or take a punch from) Hamish for her.

And then there was James. Talk about sweet. I just loved this quote Bet used to describe him:

"I'd read about beauty in books. I'd even seen some of it in the world. But I'd never before seen so much of it gathered up into a single human being."

How can you deny that? You can't, my friends. You just can't.

It's amazing the kind of education you can get from a bunch of boys. Read and learn. :)

Could you give a little blurb on your blog?
Hmm, a little blurb on my blog. Well, I started this blog to keep track of my thoughts on the books I read. Ever since the second grade, when my mom got me hooked on Nancy Drew books, I've been addicted to reading. Hence, my blog's name (Reading Addict). I mostly review books, but I also post information on the latest series, participate in weekly memes, and ramble about bookish things.

What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
As I said in the questions above, my mom was the one who got me hooked. Reading has always been something I've loved. There's nothing better than curling up with a good book after a long, hard day. I've been doing that since I learned to read.

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
I was feeling bored last summer, so I started checking out a couple of book websites. I clicked on a link to another book blogger (Bloody Bookaholic) and was fascinated that someone like me had started their own website. I decided that I wanted to become a part of the blogging world so that I could share my passion for reading with others who feel the same way.

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
I've actually been able to interview a few authors, which has been amazing. I would never have gotten the chance to talk to these authors if it weren't for my blog. My latest interview was with Jennifer Laurens, the author of Heavenly, which I loved.

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
That depends. I've never seen a movie that was better than the book, but I do enjoy some movies that are based on books. The most important thing for me is that the movie captures the feel of the book, even if it doesn't follow the plot exactly.

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
... Only one? *sighs* I guess I would probably choose Hex Hall. It looks like a really good read. My second choice would probably be Before I Fall, which looks awesome as well.

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
I read like other people watch TV, so I don't know many TV's shows besides LOST and The Office (both of which I love, even if Lost took a bit of a turn down the path of no return).

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I'm allergic to gold. Seriously, I can't wear gold earrings, which is kind of tragic.

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
I would love to cast Anne Hathaway as me. She cracks me up, and her role in the Princess Diaries pretty much describes me. People always tell me that I look like her. I have no idea what my title would be. Sad, I know.

A Golden Book Adventure

Hi, everyone!

I know I've been MIA lately, but I've come back with gusto! This past weekend, I went to visit Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. (I'm a rising senior, and have begun touring colleges.) Anyway, it happens that they have a graduate program for YA Literature, and were holding several lectures for their students. One that I attended was Golden Books presentation held by Diane Muldrow, editorial director for the Golden Books branch at Random House.

First, I was very excited to meet a real editor- I've been interested in going into the publishing industry for the past few years, especially after I began Sparrow Review. I was very impressed with the sheer amount of knowledge she was able to share regarding the Golden Books- it seemed like she knew the background of every author and illustrator that contributed to a Golden Book. I don't know about the rest of my followers, but when I was a kid, I loved my Golden books. My favorite was Doctor Dan the Bandage Man, which came with two complementary Band-Aids.

I absolutely recommend that you check out a book that Ms. Muldrow edited, called Golden Legacy. It contains everything that I heard in the presentation with more detail, no doubt. Were you, like me, addicted to Golden Books as a kid? If so, which ones?

Could you give a little blurb on your blog?
21 Pages is an outlet for one 15-year old's ramblings on books. In addition to the standard book reviews, I love to post discussions and other features. You'll see memes like In My Mailbox (Not that I really receive books to review... xD), Captivating Thursday (A meme that collects inspiring pictures, quotes, and videos, hosted by Choco at in which a girl reads) and a one that I've started, Cover Love. It compiles whatever book cover features bloggers are willing to share :) I've also got a pastiche of a rating system- a percentage out of 100, categories, and a five star system. I'm sure it'll smooth out eventually ;D

What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
I've never been able to stay far from books. I guess I can really thank my sister for exposing them to me so much! Although she was four years older than me, we did everything together- so when she started reading, so did I. I would devour whatever books she brought back from school, which means I was reading Redwall books while I was in kindergarten. Lately, our reading interests have diverged; but books have always been (and remain) as necessary to me as air. Even if it's a cereal box or a supermarket flyer, I have to be reading something!

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
It kind of happened by accident! I was just surfing the web one day and came across a "book blog." I had no idea such a concept existed. I thought it was so unique! So, excitedly, I decided to try to start one of my own. I had no idea there was such a huge community of book bloggers- it's fantastic.

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
Discussion posts! I've was just so shocked when people actually started replying to my posts. Sharing thoughts, opinions. ideas. It's so exciting for me, since I'm surprised that anyone would want to listen to my rambling! To be able to share your point of view with the world is seriously the most amazing thing I've gotten to do since starting blogging.

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
I'm actually a little split up about this. I really can't stand it when the people behind a book-inspired movie don't care about the original material at all! Like, honestly, sometimes it looks like they didn't even bother trying, because they know the name will bring in some money. Then, there's the whole debate about finding the right actors so that the fans aren't disappointed.

But you know what has worked really well so far? Animated adaptations of books! This way, there's no restrictions on creating the perfect setting, and you can make the characters look exactly the way they're imagined as in the book. Movies like Coraline and How To Train Your Dragon were critically acclaimed and really did their books justice! It's just a dream of mine to see something like an animated adaptation of The Goose Girl or The Book Thief... *sigh*

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
Agh, tough choice! I'll go with The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong. I really need to find out what happened after The Summoning! It's been out for so long and I really need to get around to reading it.

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
Lol, my sister loves The Real Housewives series and it's like you JUST CAN'T TEAR YOUR EYES AWAY from that show. Seriously. It's like some sort of bile fascination :p

I actually feel a little guilty whenever I read James Patterson's books. It's just... the cheesy tag lines on the covers, the overused plot devices, the saving-the-environment message that has plagued the Maximum Ride series... but I still keep reading them for some reason. I also actually like the books that he's "co-written" better than the ones he's written himself xD

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I'm a bit of an insomniac. Okay, a lot like an insomniac. It takes ages for me to fall asleep, and it's usually books I turn to in times like that! But there's something I kind of like about being the only one awake in the house. My normally crazy-loud family is completely silent, and it feels like I'm the only person in the world. I also get crazy bouts of inspiration and scribble down a bunch of post ideas/possible plots for a book that will never see the light of microsoft word, lol. It's just a quiet time to let me think. Then, as almost everyone who remotely knows me can confirm, I'm a total grouch in the morning. I wouldn't advise anyone to talk to me in the morning. Not a good idea at all ;D

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
It'd have to be called something like "Falling Up the Stairs". Yeah, it pretty much sums up my life. Doing lots of random, nonsensical, silly things, making a fool of myself, but loving every minute of it. I'd totally cast Miley Cyrus as the troubled teen that I am. Jk, I'm not sure who I'd cast as myself, but I'd totally want Angelina Jolie and 60s era Gregory Peck as my parents.

Although I've never read any of Holly Black's other works, I've only heard good things, especially about White Cat! I actually just got this one out from the library, but I've still got quite a ways to go on my TBR pile. It's summer though, so hopefully I'll be able to get around to it soon!

Because I Am Furniture by Thalia Chaltas Review

Anke’s father is abusive. But not to her. He attacks her brother and sister, but she’s just an invisible witness in a house of horrors, on the brink of disappearing altogether. Until she makes the volleyball team at school. At first just being exhausted after practice feels good, but as Anke becomes part of the team, her confidence builds. When she learns to yell “Mine!” to call a ball, she finds a voice she didn’t know existed. For the first time, Anke is seen and heard. Soon, she’s imagining a day that her voice will be loud enough to rescue everyone at home—including herself.

First, I should say that when I picked up this book, I did not know it was composed entirely of poems. The novel is a pretty decent size, about 350 pages, so I wasn't expecting poetry at all. However, I quickly discovered that it is a quick, but powerful read. Chaltas has this ability to weave an entire story into what must be a third (probably less) of the words used in a similar-sized novel. Truly, I was impressed. Every image, sound, word, told the tale seamlessly and with a grace that I've rarely seen. Chaltas wrote simply, yet profoundly and poignantly.

I could go on for pages about the beauty of Chaltas' writing, but I think I'll keep in short and sweet, just as her novel is. Truly, I cannot wait to see what she has in store for the YA community. I know it will be brilliant.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater Review

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human ... until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Maggie Stiefvater is a fantastic writer. Jaw-droppingly poetic, beautiful prose. She has the ability to create the most crisp images, the most heartfelt emotions. It was truly difficult to stop reading; her words melt so easily in your mind that you're not sure where the story starts and your imagination begins. Gorgeous, gorgeous prose.

Sam and Grace were so easy to root for. Both were very likeable, well-developed characters; you couldn't help but get wrapped up in their story. And Shiver is a wonderful romance, no doubt. However, don't expect a deep poignance or earth-shattering message when the book wraps up. Shiver is, most simply, a love story. At times I found myself a little weary of how Sam and Grace became the center of the other's lives; all the two could think about was their other half. It bothered me that because they had found each other, nothing else was important. Yes, Grace went to shool almost every day and finished all of her homework, but its importance was lost once Sam entered the picture. College? A future? Not mentioned. This was the only bit that made me cringe a bit. Once a boy (or the boy, in this case) enters the picture, everything else goes on the backburner. Okay, rant finished. ;)

What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
I hated learning to read, and it wasn't until the second grade that I began to find books that made sounding out the words seem worth it. One day I took a book from the Bailey School Kids series by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones home from the library, and I've been hooked on books ever since.

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
I discovered the blogging world through researching authors of books I enjoyed. I wanted to know how and why they wrote, and that led me to their blogs, which led me to review blogs. Reading blogs like this helped me select books I knew I would like. Last year I decided I wanted to join the book-themed conversation, so I started Bookduck. My favorite part about blogging are all the wonderful people involved and the interesting stories they share.

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
Lately I've been too busy with school to do much on my blog, but the most exciting thing within the last few months was receiving the opportunity to review a copy of Lauren Mechling's Dream Life and interview Lauren. It was a lot of fun.

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
For the most part, I like them. I dislike them when they stray too far from the character of the books that inspired them.

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
Hmph. This is a difficult question. Assuming I'm in a magical bookstore full of unreleased books (and maybe a unicorn or two), I would buy A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner. Her other books are brilliantly plotted and beautifully written, and I'm excited to read this one, which comes out in late March.

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
My favorite guilty-pleasure TV show is Gilmore Girls. I don't believe in feeling guilty about reading.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
Most people do not know that I'm addicted to Cheerios. Best. Cereal. Ever.

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
The movie would be called Striped Rainbows and I would be played by Katharine Hepburn, who would come back to life just to star in it. We don't look much alike, but I like the way she talked.

The Great Gatsby by Review

Although Gatsby was assigned reading for my English class, but I found that it wasn't like most school reading; I truly enjoyed the story. Fitzgerald wrote in a simple style that was easy to follow, one that I found difficult to put down. The characters intrigued me the most. Nick was relatable, I appreciated having a companion in this strage and hedonistic world. Though Daisy frustrated me, she was probably the character I most enjoyed reading about. Every time I could have sworn her head was filled with fluff, she would say something that was on the fine line of intelligence or depth. I think most of the characters surprised me in one way or another; I enjoyed peeling back their layers one by one.

I stayed up late in the night on several occasions not only to finish the number of chapters we were required to read, but to read it for my own enjoyment. I must say, I was a little saddened by the ending, but I thought it fit the story well. I will no doubt buy a copy for myself soon, so I can reread it, and discover pieces that I missed or can find new meaning in. If The Great Gatsby is not on your bookshelf, don't hesitate to add it.

At Books-a-Million this week there was a buy 2, get one free sale on the classics, so I snatched them up! I've read both A Little Princess and Swiss Family Robinson before, and loved them. Although I have yet to delve into King Arthur, I've become all the more intrigued by the British television show, Merlin.

Finally, school is DONE!! More time to read, more time to blog- it's going to be a fantastic summer, I can just feel it! It also gives me time to work on my challenges, which I really doubt I've made any progress on as of yet this year. I'll be doing a midway challenge post within the next week or so, as well as catch up on all of the reviews that I haven't written yet: Beautiful Creatures and The Great Gatsby.

Right now, I'm in the middle of Shiver. OH. MY. It's just soooooooo incredibly well-written. LoveLoveLove.

I'll be seeing much, much more of you soon, my friends. But now I am off to bake some scones and custards for the holiday weekend. My family is eating well tonight. ;P

In a Heartbeat by Loretta Ellsworth Review

From her vantage point in the afterlife, Eagan reflects back on her memories, and what she could have done differently, through her still-beating heart. And when fourteen-year-old Amelia learns she will be getting a heart transplant, her fear and guilt battle with her joy at this new chance at life. And afterwards when she starts to feel different — dreaming about figure skating, craving grape candy —her need to learn about her donor leads her to discover and explore Eagan’s life,meeting her grieving loved ones and trying to bring the closure they all need to move on.
Told in alternating viewpoints, In a Heartbeat tells the emotional and compelling story of two girls sharing one heart.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up In a Heartbeat; I liked the whole premise of the novel, but I was unsure exactly what sort of story it would be. I didn't know whether I was diving into a heart-breaker that would require a box of Kleenex, or a sweet, sappy tale that would leave me smiling. In truth, it was both, although you might only need one tissue.

What I was surprised to learn was how simply it was written- I certainly don't mean that in a negative way, but this is a novel that can easily be read from ages tweleve and up. Keeping that in mind, the reading was light and the plot was not chock-full of complex layers. Which, once again, wasn't a bad thing, just an unexpected one.

Truly, though, the story was fantastic, and actually very educational. I had no idea that the idea from In a Heartbeat was actually based on real situations where patients who had received transplants experienced changes that could be linked back to their donors. In that respect, I applaud Ellsworth for taking on a topic that must have taken quite a bit of research to put together. The ending was very satisfying, and there where a few tear-jerker moments. All in all, a great read.

What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
I've always loved reading.

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
I started looking for book reviews online and found this whole community of people that liked to talk about books as much as I did. From there, it was just a few steps to start my own blog.

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
I took a break this winter, only posting a couple of times a month. It has given me time to think about where I want to go with my blog and the break totally renewed my interest in blogging!

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
Hmm, that's a hard one. It's a mix for me. Some I love, some I hate, and most I can appreciate that the movie is totally different from the book and that's ok.

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
The Heart Is Not a Size by Beth Kephart which will be out at the end of March...would be awesome to get it early. :)

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
I have a lot of guilty pleasure TV shows...Castle (cause it's about a writer!), Grey's Anatomy, Gossip Girl (I'm a little tired of Season 3 but I'm hanging in there), and recently I started watching Life Unexpected (pretty good although sometimes cliche).

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I don't post much about my personal life on my blog so there's probably a lot that people don't know about me. Here's 3 things. I wrote horrible poetry in high school...seriously, it makes me cringe when I read it now. I love rock climbing and white water rafting. And I really want a puppy.

Dark Divine vs. Beautiful Creatures

These past two weeks I've been participating as a judge in the YA Bloggers Debut Book Battle, making the decision between The Dark Divine and Beautiful Creatures. Which will go on to the next round?

For me, this was an easy decision, based on mostly on one factor: the quality of the writing. Both of these stories have incredible plot lines; they're actually similar in their paranormal aspects. However, The Dark Divine's writing just couldn't match up to Beautiful Creatures, which is filled with a Southern lilt that's almost impossible to top. Truly, both were fun reads, but I found Beautiful Creatures to be much more enjoyable to read (despite its length!)

I could probably go on for paragraphs and paragraphs, detailing character development and such, but I wanted to put this in a quick nutshell. Please head on over to The Shady Glade to read more about the book battle!

Lost for Words by Alice Kuipers Review

All Sophie wants to do is forget. But it's not easy now that everything's changed. The house feels too big, school drags on for too long, lights are too bright, the room spins, and her hands get sweaty for no reason. And she can't remember why she was ever best friends with Abigail, who is obsessed with parties and boys. Only the new girl, Rosa-Leigh, with her prose poems and utter confidence, might understand. But talking to her seems impossible.

Lost in memories of the life she once had, Sophie retreats into herself. But there's only so long she can keep everything bottled up inside before she explodes. Maybe by confronting the tragedy of her past she'll figure out how to fix her future.

I admit, when I signed up for this ARC tour at Around the World Tours, I mostly picked it up for the cover; it's positively stunning. I glanced at the synopsis, and it sounded interesting, so I put my name down. It turns out this read was a little more than I bargained for.

The first half of the book was very, very tedious. We wait and wait and wait to learn what horrific thing could have shaken our main character, Sophie, so terribly that she's plagued by panic attacks and has trouble reaching out to her friends. But, really, you don't find out until the later chapters, which, although made sense with the story, wasn't my ideal for good pacing. While there were definitely some major events going on during the first part of the novel, it all felt like a foundation for the last few chapters, where everything started to pick up.

Besides the pacing issue, I felt that this was a very interesting read. Sophie was a wonderfully complicated character; she was very three-dimensional, and even relatable, despite what she had gone through. For the most part, she was easy to root for, even when she made decisions that I didn't approve of. By the end, I was exceptionally fond of her character, and had my fingers crossed her situation worked out well.

Although this definitely wasn't my favorite book of the year, it's definitely worth a read, if you have a little extra time on your hands.

I'm Free! (Almost)

Hey Everyone! Sorry I haven't been around much this past week; I've been studying like crazy for my AP US History exam. I finally took it today, and I think I actually did a decent job on it!! :D

Thankfully, I only have one more AP exam (English), next Wendesday, and then I'm FREE!! Which means I'll be able to get back into the swing of reading very, very soon!

The Dark Divine by Bree Despain Review

Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared—the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in blood. But she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night really held.

I wrote this review as a judge for Alyssa's YA Bloggers Debut Book Battle.

I have a feeling that I am the minority here in the blogging world- in the midst of number of people who loved this one. *cringes* But I will continue.

There were definitely aspects of this book that I enjoyed. I adored Grace, the main character, who is very grounded in her sense of morality. She has a very strong sense of herself, which I appreciated. She isn't too perfect however, in that she is wonderfully flawed in her weakness for Daniel. I wasn't too fond of Daniel myself, he started out so grungy and screwed up; I didn't trust him very much. Also, the twist on the werewolves story was very original. Despain weaves it into the tale very well, I didn't find it confusing at all. Sometimes I feel like the whole werewolf concept is overused, but this was refreshing.

However, I didn't think the book was especially well-written. It was a quick read, and an entertaining one, but I wasn't exactly impressed with it. In some way, I understand that the writing can be secondary, especially when the plotline is so captivating. But I thought Dark Divine truly could have been stellar had it been more well-crafted.

Will I be sticking around for the next in the series? Maybe. I've never been a huge fan of paranormal, nor do I ever think it will ever be my favorite genre. However, I'm sure that there are plenty of paranormal stories out there that will knock my socks off. Maybe even the sequel to this one.

Perchance to Dream was nearly as much fun as Eyes Like Stars. The characters were wonderfully developed, quirky, and incredibly witty. I had missed all of the fairies so much, their obsession with food especially.

Sometimes I wished that I had brushed up on Eyes Like Stars before I read this installment; there were some things I had forgotten that you were expected to remember. There were a few points that confused me a bit, but I still felt like Mantchev stayed true to the story and the characters. There was still the conflict between Nate and Ariel, of course. Most of the book was spent in limbo between the two. I'm still more of an Ariel girl myself, even though Nate has a great heart.

I can't wait for the third book in the series; Lisa Mantchev is one to watch!! I wonder if she'll have any other projects besides this series?? No matter, I'm still excited!

What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
I've always loved reading sine I was a child. I loved the adventure in reading. Being able to escape to this different place or get sucked into someone else's life was always fascinating to me.

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
Through Myspace. I found randomly found a few bloggers - I think it was Book Chic and The Story Siren - and started reading reviews. I showed my friend Cheryl a few of the sites, and I'm not for sure when or how long after, but she sent me an IM one day saying, "I'm staring a book blog and you're helping me." I was like okay, awesome!

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
Lately I've ran into more authors to feature on Rock This! Thursday. It's a weekly meme I host where I discuss books and music. It's really cool to see what songs they've chosen for their playlists when writing novels, and just getting a variety of new music to listen to.

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
I'm a little bit of both. There are some movies I've liked, and others....*raspberry sound*. I usually try to read a book before I watch the movie, but that doesn't always happen. I refuse to read The Notebook because I loved the movie too much. I have a feeling the book will completely top the movie where I won't like it anymore.

A Match Made in High School by Kristin Walker. I just read this last night for an ARC Tour, but I have to get my own copy. This book is so hilarious! It's definitely become one of my all time favorites.

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
Bad Girls Club. These chicks are crazzzzy! Also One Tree Hill is starting to become a guilty pleasure. I don't even know what they're trying to do with the story line anymore.

When it comes to reading....I have this weird thing for really cheesy teen romance books that came out in the 80's. There use to be this series, (cannot remember the name of it), that I use to read, but I sold them all in a yard sale years ago. When I stumble across one now a days, I pick it up.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I don't have an appendix!

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
Oh wow...hhmm...it would probably be called Me and My Big Fat Mouth. (I'm a talker.) For casting, I would choose Kristen Bell. We look nothing alike except we're both blondes, but she's one of my favorite actresses.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan Review

Hilarious, poignant, and deeply insightful, John Green and David Levithan’s collaborative novel is brimming with a double helping of the heart and humor that have won both them legions of faithful fans.

I finished this book with a smile. Literally, I just couldn't wipe it off my face. There is a magical quality about the whole story, the ending. I don't think I'll ever be able to put my finger on what exactly makes me adore John Green's writing so much, but I can definitely tell you why I love David Levithan's. He brings this rawness, this incredibly emotional rawness that I can't tear my eyes away from. Name an emotion, and you will find it in Will Grayson, Will Grayson. Anger, fear, joy, contentedness, nervousness, you name it. And these emotions all lead somewhere; they have a greater overall message, one that tugs on your heartstrings in the end.

Humor is a huge part of this novel as well. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud lines, some that will have you clutching your stomach, and others that only require a brief chuckle. Thankfully, there wasn't much crude humor (as often found in Green's other books,) but the profanity was a bit over the top for me. No doubt I hear each and every one of those words regularly at school, but I choose not to use them. It's exactly how the majority of teenagers speak, so I felt that, most of the time, this book rang true. Seeing it in writing sometimes feels more harsh than hearing it, however.

I loved it ever since I could understand written language, lol. I don't know where my love of books came from-my parents weren't exactly avid readers. My father's choice of reading material was the newspaper (boring.) and my mother barely reads. (a tragedy, in my opinion.) My crazy love for books must be recessive :)

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
I originally had no clue about the blogging world. I always used to go online to find out about the latest books, stalking author sites and clicking away link after link where I'd discover more books that needed to be read. Eventually (I remember this clearly) I stumbled onto The Story Siren's site. I'd occasionally read her reviews but since I didn't have a blogger acount back then, I never commented or anything. But the idea of a book blog stuck with me for a long time and then finally I just decided to try it out.

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
I have a lot of fun interviewing authors and participating in ARC tours. Those are great! Plus I love being able to connect with so many fantastic book bloggers (*coughCATEcough*)

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
It depends. I try to not compare books to their movie counterparts because I KNOW that movies never perfectly match the book; to avoid frustration/anger, I just walk into a theater with an open mind. Most of the time the books are waaay better than the movies.

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier. It's a great book. :)

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
Guilty pleasure T.V. show.... probably Vampire Diaries. As for books? Fluffy romance novels.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
Mmm... that I'm interested in bellydancing. I seem so serious and I know people wouldn't expect that of me. xD

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
I wish my response could be as creative as this question! I think you may have stumped me, Cate. um... let's see.... I would title my life Whirlwind. Because a lot of things, whether they're weird, scary or wonderful, happen to me. As for an actress....honestly I'm not sure. BUT! Can I choose my romantic male lead? Can I have Hugh Dancy? Please?

Movie Review: How to Train Your Dragon

When I stepped into the movie theater, Coke Icee in hand, I have to admit, I wasn't expecting much. A cute, cheesy little kids' movie. Boy, was I wrong.

HTTYD was, to begin with, was aesthetically gorgeous. The animation was spectacular; I can't even describe how detailed everything was. The artists left no stone unturned- it was clear that they spent as much time creating the sunsets as they did on the dragons themselves. I was completely blown away. I'm not really a fan of 3D movies, but I think this one would be really awesome, especially with all the flying scenes.

The storyline was SO. ADORABLE. First of all, Vikings? And not just any Vikings: dragon-slaying Vikings! It was original and had a sense of humor. I just completely fell in love with it. And there was a kick-butt girl, Astrid, who I just adored. Girl power!! I was so excited to learn that this was also a book. I've gotta get it now!!

So, if you're looking for something funny and sweet and obviously a labor of love, I'd go get your tickets now! This is a must-see. :D

This is one of my favorite books. Ever. It's a retelling of (you guessed it!) The Goose Girl, from the Brothers Grimm. Hale uses the most beautiful, descriptive writing I've ever read. She's an amazing storyteller. I'll let you find out for yourself before I get too fan-girly on you. ;P

The Book Thief
By Markus Zusak

If you have not read this book, you have not lived. Markus Zusak is by far one of the most brilliant writers I have ever read. The Book Thief is one of the saddest, most gratifying books. It is an experience within itself.

The Truth About Forever
By Sarah Dessen

Oh, how I love this book. It's Sarah Dessen, so you know it's good. Wes is by far my favorite Dessen boy. Sa-wooooon. ;P

I read this last year, and absolutely loved it. I remember that some of the names were a tad confusing, but the book itself was a work of art.

The Little Princess

This is one of my favorite classics. I used to read it all the time as a kid; I just love all of Burnett's writing. I remember for a project in elementary school we had to make a newspaper based on a book we read, and this is the book I chose. It was an awesome project; I just love that time period. I have to pick it up again soon!

Eyes Like Stars
By Lisa Mantchev

I just discovered this book in January, and immediately fell in love with the story. The characters made the story so enjoyable, and Mantchev has a sense of humor that any author would envy. ;)

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins Review

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

It took me about seventy pages to get into Hex Hall. Yeah. Seventy. It's not that the beginning wasn't interesting, or that it didn't lay a good foundation for the story. It just felt like there wasn't enough going on to keep me engaged. I was expecting more of a Sabrina-the-Teenage-Witch kind of plot, and it sort of was, but to the extreme. Also extremely slow. Thankfully, though, after that first chunks, the plot started to take off.

Hawkins makes Sophie an extremely relatable teenager, I think. She's like an actual person; she's flawed, and maybe even hides a darker side. I really love flawed characters, it makes them so much more interesting. That was one thing I loved...every character, no matter how screwed up, was completely three-dimensional. And Hawkins has an incredible sense of humor; there were dozens of laugh out loud moments. It's been a long time since I've laughed that hard reading. :)

Towards the end, Hex Hall was one of those I-don't-want-to-put-it-down reads. If you're looking for something light and a little bit cutesy, I'd pick it up! I'll probably be sticking around for the sequel; Hawkins leaves you at this incredible cliff hanger, haha!

Hold Still breaks your heart and somehow manages to sew it back together again. It's hard to exactly describe my feelings as I began reading, because, for me at least, it was incredibly difficult to take in Caitlin's situation and her way of dealing with death. It took me a few chapters to get a firm grip on the story and the emotional weight that came with it. But once I was able to do that, the story took off.

I loved how LaCour wrote simply, yet poetically. She tells Caitlin's story with a painful grace that helps you to overlook the tragedy and focus on the healing. Although you may have to read this book in chunks- it's not one I would recommend reading in one night- there was always a fluidity to the novel. Even the drawings were beautiful; they added yet another meaningful layer to the story.

This is no doubt my favorite book that I've read this year. Please go pick it up; you truly won't regret it.

Hi everyone! How was your Easter holiday? Here, I've spent all my time relaxing, as well as updating a few things on the blog.

The first thing you may notice is my nifty new navigation bar, equipped with several tabs including a new About section, as well as all my policies and archives. I hope everything is a little more accessible this way; it's much more space-efficient than the clunky tabs I used to have on my left sidebar.

Could you give a little blurb on your blog?
When I first started blogging, I found it really hard to pin myself down to one genre of books. So, my blog, Debbie's Book Bag reviews a variety of books from many genre's. I review a lot of Christian Fiction and Romance, a few Mystery's and Thrillers (James Patterson is one my favs!), and a little bit of everything else. My blog participates in several weekly meme's including, What are you reading on Monday's and Tuesday Teasers. I love challenges and post my progress toward all the challenges I have for this year on my sidebar. I have very eclectic tastes when it comes to books, so you never know what you might find.

What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
I started reading when I was in grade school and never looked back. I began reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House series from my school library and then began to branch out to other books and genre's. When I was in high school there was many a night that I sat up to one or two in the morning reading and I still do! I am the type of reader, that just really enjoys reading anything. I very rarely find a book that doesn't have something to interest me and I have never given up on a book and just never finished it. Because of that I don't usually have to many reviews, where I just didn't like the book.

How were you introduced into the blogging world?
I stumbled into the blogging world completely by accident. I am a diabetic and was put off work for awhile and I had a lot of time on my hands. I started focusing a lot on my writing and journalistic efforts and spent a lot more time on the computer than I had ever before. In the process of working with different magazines and editors, someone mentioned to me that they had a book blog and asked me to check it out. I did and the rest is history. I had no idea that you could go to blogs, enter contests and win books and that you could post reviews and do your own blog. I absolutely love it! It's a great outlet, for my ideas on other writers as I continue my own writing career.

What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
The most fun thing for me since I started my blog was becoming acquainted with other people in the book blogging community. I think it's wonderful to be able to share my love of reading with others, so I've had a giveaway or two and I've just started doing a monthly comment contest for a book of the readers choice under $25 dollars. That has been really exciting and I have had a lot of success with that so far.

What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
I have a thing about watching a movie that comes from a book. I rarely ever go see the movie until after I have read the book. The reason for this is because, the book is always so much better. They have to leave so much of the back story and so much of the character development. I do like to watch them though and see what differences there are between the book and the movie and that sort of thing. Pride and Prejudice would have to be my favorite book, made into a movie. The version with Kiera Knightley is my favorite.

You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
The book at the very top of my Wish List right now is, Hope's Folly by Linnea Sinclair, it is the 3rd book in the Dock Five Universe series. It is a paranormal romance. It's been out for a little while, but I really, really want to read it.

What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
My favorite guilty pleasure T.V. show would have to be Lost! I absolutely love that show. I don't watch much T.V. at all, but I don't miss Lost. I have no idea what I will watch after this final season.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
There are so many things to choose from. Most people don't know that I have two beautiful daughters, ages 10 and 12 and a very rowdy service dog, names Sundae.

If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
LOL! This is hard. I think it would be called, "A Country Writer", because essentially that's me. I have no idea who to cast. The heroine would have to be divinely beautiful and full of sass and spirit. LOL! Just kidding. I would probably cast someone like Holly Hunter or Kyra Sedgwick, both have some spunk. I definitely do not look anything like them though.

Anything else you’d like to add?
The only thing I want to add is a big thank you for the interview and I hope everyone will come by and visit my blog. I think there is something for everybody. I love books and I love reading and instilling that love of the written word in other people.

Review Policy

What I read and review: While I generally read books in the YA genre, I also occasionally enjoy middle grade and adult books. I especially love fairy tale retellings, as well as realistic fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, chick-lit, and some non-fiction. I would be delighted to receive review copies! I do not particularly enjoy reading science fiction or books about vampires, zombies, etc. I would also like to mention that books I read are primarily clean (i.e. no vivid sexual scenes.) I would greatly appreciate it if this would be taken into account when offering book for review! I will gladly accept ARCs for review, however I am currently not accepting e-books or PDFs.

How I review: In my reviews, I will post the title and the author, as well as a summary of the book, usually from the inside cover or from Goodreads. While I do not break my reviews down into sections (i.e. plot, characters, etc.) I generally address these in my reviews, as well as the overall feeling I have for the book. At the end of each review, I post a rating on a scale of one to ten. Although there is no specific formula, I generally enjoy reading books that I rate eight to ten, and will usually reread. Books rated in the six/seven range are pretty good, and those rated five and below I probably didn't enjoy.

A note about honesty: While I can guarantee a review for a book, I cannot guarantee a positive review. I state my opinions clearly and honestly, but I still keep in mind all of the hard work that went into creating the book. I do my best to be fair to the author, and in situations where I do not enjoy the story, I will do my best to highlight redeeming qualities.

How long it will take for me to review: While I try to post reviews within a month of receiving the book, it truly depends, especially during the school year. My studies come first, so reviewing may not always be timely. Of course, if you would like me to have a book reviewed by a certain time, please let me know and I will adjust my schedule accordingly. In regards to ARCs, I will gladly post my review a few weeks before it's release date, if you would like.

Note: Although I will never sell an ARC, I may use it for a giveaway. If you would prefer for me not to do so, just let me know.

The Line by Teri Hall Review

It’s said that bizarre creatures and superhumans live on the other side, in Away. Nobody except tough old Ms. Moore would ever live next to the Line. Nobody but Rachel and her mother, who went to live there after Rachel’s dad died in the last war. It’s a safe, quiet life. Until Rachel finds a mysterious recorded message that can only have come from Away. The voice is asking for help.

Who sent the message? Why is her mother so protective? And to what lengths is Rachel willing to go in order to do what she thinks is right? -Goodreads

I was completely surprised with how impressive The Line was! My expectations were a little low, I'll admit, just because it's sci-fi, and I'm not a big fan (I always say that, but then I usually end up liking it anyway, haha!) I liked how The Line was mostly rooted in what (I consider to be) relatable times and technology. There were some advancements, of course, but it was easy to understand how they worked and the impacts they had on the story.

I thought Hall did a fantastic job with the characters, although I found that there was no real antagonist besides the government. That could definitely change throughout the next books, but I was a little disappointed with how many characters had a change in heart. There wasn't a specific character that could be blamed. However, I felt like it was very easy to connect to Rachel and the choices she made. I can't wait to see her develop over the rest of the series.

I only wish it was longer! It was only a little over 200 pages. I know there will be other installments, but I was a still disappointed that there wasn't more. All in the name of suspense, I know, I know. *sigh*

Hello, everyone! I hope you've had a lovely week. Spring break is coming soon for me- it's the week after next, so I'll have some extra time to work on the ol' blog. Hi everyone! Spring is finally here! I actually got two books in my mailbox this week! IMM was created by Kristi from The Story Siren.

The first is Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcis and Maragret Stohl, which I won at a contest hosted my the lovely Lucy at Delightful Reviews. I had no idea how thick this book was until I received it; I think this may have to be a summer read, as 550+ pages is quite a lot to handle during the schoolyear. ;)

And the second is Read, Remember, Recommend for Teens: A Reading Journal for Young Adult Book Lovers by Rachelle Rogers Knight. This is the book that I'm featured in, along with dozens of other YA bloggers. I actually just started flipping through this one last night, and found that there was more than two pages of fairy tale retelling recommendations. I was in heaven.

N: I can't remember not loving to read. Books have just ALWAYS been there.

N: My mother! She runs a blog called Celebrity Do-Gooders and yelled at me to make a book blog when she thought I was talking too much.

C: What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately? Lately? I got to interview Julie Kagawa, author of The Iron King. I love her - she's so funny and so nice.

C: What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
N: Eek! It depends on the movies. For instance, I couldn't stand the Eragon adaption - but I love the Chronicles of Narnia movies more than the books! It all varies.

C: You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
N: Right now? I'd snatch Gail Carriger's Changeless, the sequel to her uberly awesome Soulless. I'm SO looking forward to it.

C: What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
N: No book is a guilty pleasure. My guilty pleasure TV show? I'd say Glee, except I don't feel guilty about it! Haha. Probably BBC's Merlin. It doesn't stick to Arthurian legend at all, but it's soooo good. I love BBC.

C: What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
N:I love everything to do with the Renaissance Faire. The outfits, the food, the jousting, the people...
... maybe that's why I love BBC's Merlin so much!

C: If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
I don't know who I'd cast, but I'd have Tim Burton direct it, just because it'd be bound to be epic.
(And that JDepp and Helena Bonham Carter'd get stuck in there somehow. Which would ROCK.)

Yesterday, I found out that Sparrow Review is going to be featured in a book called Read, Remember, Recommend for Teens by Rachelle Rogers Knight. It essentially "offers more than 2,400 award-winning and notable reading suggestions in many genres, cross-referenced to help parents and teens chose the right books for them." Apparently there is also a section where YA book bloggers are featured. For me, you guys, this is amazing. I am so incredibly flattered to have been chosen for part of this project, and I thought I would share the news with you.

After by Amy Efaw Review

Certainly not someone like Devon- straight-A student, soccer player with Olympic dreams, more mature than her own mother. But desperation and panic drove her to do what most people can't even imagine. Now Devon's in a juvenile detention center, charged with attempted murder.

Because of the nature of this book, it's very difficult to review. It's hard to look at the writing quality or the characterization when the topic is so hard-hitting and difficult to comprehend.

After was written in a very matter-of-fact way, which I think was exactly the way it needed to be written. The idea of "dumpster babies" is grounded by emotion and opinion, both weighty and tricky to approach. However, Efaw's third person point of view addressed this issue. Had she put the reader directly into Devon's shoes, this story could have easily been too overwhelming.

I also loved Dom's character. For every emotional breakdown Devon had, Dom was there with a voice of calm. She wasn't preachy or condescending. She was a capable and sensible attorney that didn't share her oppinon of Devon's crime. It was relieving to have a well-rounded character amidst the mess.

Although I think After had a powerful message to spread, it wasn't my favorite read. It was heavy and saddening. I would recommend it to those interested in the 'dumpster baby phenomenon,' but I would consider the overall mood of the book before jumping right in.

Alice in Wonderland Movie Review

I'll admit, yesterday when I went to see Alice, I had high expectations. After all the hubbub and the big names and the fantastic reviews, I was expecting to be blown away. Sometimes Tim Burton movies creep me out a little, and I was worried that this new version of the movie would be disappointing. Or freakishly creepy.

However, this film went way beyond my expectations. The special effects alone were spectacular. I was blown away by the Wonderland; it was gorgeous. It was crazy and wild and beautiful and memorable. The creatures were interesting and well-developed. The acting was also phenomenal, especially Helena Bonham Carter. I'm not sure if I thought she stole the show as they said, but she was pretty amazing. As was Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway. Also, why did no one mention that Alan Rickman was in this?? Just another plus in my book!

I wasn't quite sure about the plot line...I originally thought it would just be a recreation of the book, but I found out that Alice was much older, I wasn't sure how that was going to play out. I think everything wrapped up nicely, and, yeah, maybe it was a little cheesy towards the end, but I thought it was sweet. And perhaps it hinted at another installment???

Also, did anyone else notice there was quite a bit of eye-stabbing? That definitely grossed me out. And it wasn't just once- it was multiple times. That bit was the only part I wasn't fond of.

If I were you, I'd head on over to the movie theater, grab a coke icee, a pack of twizzlers, and a ticket to Alice in Wonderland. Right. Now. Do it. You'll regret it if you don't.

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa Review

Truthfully, my feellings for this book are still conflicted. The Iron King has a great premise; it's very ingtriguing. I generally like fantasy, but this was one case where I felt that there was a lot of sci-fi mixed in, which isn't really my cup of tea. There were some bits, like the ordeal with the people of New Orleans, that seemed a little over-the-top for me, and I didn't really feel like each scene advanced the plot.

However, I really loved the dark humor that was used throughout. Grimalkin's dry, witty lines kept me reading throught the places where the plot was lacking or where the writing was a little under par. I think I'llvbe sticking out for the rest of the series, just for that. And to see what happens with Meghan/Puck/Ash. Personally, I'm leaning toward Ash on this one, you guys. He's mysterious. Of course, Puck has a heart of gold, but he's old. Ash is old too.

Sidenote:
What's with the centuries-old love interests these days? I mean, it doesn't really matter if they're in the bodies of gorgeous young guys; it's the idea that he's 100+ year old person falling in love with a sixteen year old girl. To me, that screams pedophile. Gross.

I hope you're all having a lovely weekend! Here, spring is just around the corner- which means (that's right!) Flip Flop Season. Haha. ;P

For those of you who haven't seen this little weekly wrap-up before, I'm glad to inform you that Kirthi from Pages asked me to be her affiliate, and now we're doing this weekly feature. :)

This week, Kirthi re-reviewed The Heretic Queen, after researching ancient Egypt. She found herself enjoying the book much more with the extra background information. I think this can be said of any book set in another time period; it's definitely easier to understand if you have a good idea of what you're reading.

This week, Kirthi received Anastasia's Secret and My Invented Life in her mailbox. I don't know about you guys, but I love learning about Anastasia. Anyone remember that movie from the '90's with Meg Ryan and John Cusack? LoveLoveLove.

Also, Kirthi's poll regarding which Hunger Games love interest was most liked; overwhelmingly, the voters answered with 'Peeta'! We shall see in Mockingjay, my friends. ;)

C: Could you give a little blurb on your blog?
S: My blog is specifically a YA blog. It features the usual like reviews, interviews, guest posts and cool memes like Waiting on Wednesday and In My Mailbox. I'm trying to figure out some features of my own to run as well to make it more individual.

C: What got you hooked on reading- did you love it as a child, or was it something you grew into?
S: I suppose I've always been a big reader. The books that really turned me onto reading where the Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. But before that I was turning the pages on Rosy and Jim's Big Day Out and those cool books that make animal noises (I still own them *ahem*) and knew that reading was something I'd always love to do.

C: How were you introduced into the blogging world?
S: Well, I read a feature in a magazine about a year ago that had a list of tips for aspiring writers. It suggested starting a blog to get practising so I did but it was just a random blog that wasn't entirely book related. I then began reviewing on teen book site Chicklish and decided I wanted to have my own book blog to make new friends and basically just write about the stuff I love. So, I took all my knowledge of book reviewing from Chicklish and The Sweet Bonjour book blog was born!

C: What’s been the most fun or exciting thing you’ve been able to do on your blog lately?
S:Well nothing OMG-incredible-throw-my-hands-up-in-the-air-and-scream-like-I-just-don't-care has happened yet but I just love communicating with other bloggers and just sharing my love of reading with anyone that cares enough to read really. That in itself is really exciting and fun!

C: What’s your opinion of books made into movies? Love ‘em or Hate ‘em?
S: It entirely depends on whether I've read the book before. If I have I would probably hate it because most books that have been made into movies have been pretty awful or at least nowhere near as good as the book. If I haven't read the book, I would probably enjoy the film because I'd have nothing to compare it to. I'm still pondering on whether I should read The Lovely Bones because I really want to see the film but I think I'd hate the film if I read it.

C: You can only afford to purchase one book at the bookstore today. What do you choose?
S: Probably Beautiful Creatures because I absolutely loved the book but I read an ARC so it's gotten pretty skanky and ripped by now so I think I'd treat myself to a beautiful finished copy and just never open it!

C: What’s your favorite guilty-pleasure T.V. show? Or book?
S: My favourite guilty pleasure show is Glee. You can't help but love it! It immediately cheers you up if you're upset about something!

C: What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? S: I don't have any unbelievable secret. Maybe the fact that I'm writing a book at the moment. I'm quite far into it but I'm still unsure as to what it's about. I just sat down one day and started to write.

C:If your life were being made into a movie, what would it be called, and who would you cast?
S: That's so hard! It would probably be called The Life of a Transparent Anomaly. That pretty much sums me up lol! I'm not really the loudest person at school and people think I'm pretty weird because I tell really bad jokes but I laugh hysterically every time I tell one. I really like Ellen Page who was in Juno so I think I'd want her to be in it.
