Library Load

Monday, August 10, 2009 |
To be honest, I usually have a difficult time in the YA section of my local library. We don't get new books in very often unless they're exceptionally popular, which means that you may have to hunt around for a good read. Sometimes I only come home with a book or two, but today was different. Today I seemed to be interested in nearly every book that caught my eye. Which turned out to be many more than two...

Circle the Soul Softly by Davida Wills Hurwin- I figured I'd giver her another try. See my review of A Time for Dancing here. and Light Years by Tammar Stein. Never heard of her before, but I was up for finding new and unordinary things to read today.

The Lace Dowry by Andrea Cheng and The Truth About Sparrows by Marian Hale. Haven't heard of either of these two yet; and, yes, isn't it odd that these sparrows keep popping up all over the place? Also, Upstream by Melissa Lion. It's a quick read, which I'll be needing all the more of once school starts!

By the River by Steven Herrick and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. Someone said that the second book was similar to Harry Potter. Apparently in more than just subject matter- it's a thick as a Potter as well!

Well, these should keep me busy for a while, don't you think? Hopefully in one of these I can find another favorite book to add to my Favorite's Shelfari (did you happen to notice it on the sidebar? Pretty...)

Yay, I love Shelfari :)

Light Years looks good- something I'd definitely read.

I just found your blog from a comment on a blog I read, and it's awesome! I love your background, too, and your banner. I can't think up a banner for my blog :P As you can see, I'm following now :)

Oops, sorry for the rambling :P Also for the excessive use of smiley faces. I'm working on it :P Oops.

I remember reading Circle the Soul Softly from the library. I can remember the basics of it but not everything. Not a book that has been imprinted on my brain but I remember it being good if you like books about abuse, panic attacks, and acting.

Hey Meggin- Korianne made my header and chose the background; I'm in love with it. She actually has an entire blog dedicated to creating other blogger's headers and such. She's amazing! I actually have a link on my sidebar if you want to check website out! :) Do you have a blog? There's no link on your follower button...

Rachel- I found the same to be true in Hurwin's other book, A Time for Dancing. Although she writes about some deep stuff, it isn't always memorable

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is like Harry Potter? hmm, I didn't find that! JS & MN is like 1000 pages of really small print, and it goes into way descriptive detail and meandering thoughts about two magicians who actually act a lot like lawyers! its victorian in style and sort of more embedded in the human world for the most part with a bit of ghostly interaction, unlike HP where its mostly in magic world and they get to play around a lot with spells straight away and there's that boyish humour which is more mannish and uptight in JS & MN. I loved it, but I've heard the book compared more to The Name of The Rose by Umberto Eco or that Quincunx book- and I tend to agree. Do you think perhaps its likened to HP only because of the magic element?

Have you heard of The Magicians, by Lev Grossman? Apparently its like a cross between Harry Potter and The Secret History, by Donna Tartt - now I am excited about that one :)

Aimee- You're probably right, perhaps anytime there's any touch of magic and the real world readers immediately think 'Harry Potter!', but I see now that they are very mistaken. I actually haven't heard of the Magicians, but I'll look into it!
